Day 13: Reunited…

“My friends and family are my support system. They tell me what I need to hear, not what I want to hear and they are there for me in the good and bad times. Without them I have no idea where I would be and I know that their love for me is what’s keeping my head above the water.” – Kelly Clarkson

At the beginning of this challenge, I did not have a finite structure or concrete plan of attack. I wanted to lose weight and maintain a more balanced diet. I set a couple of goals. I committed myself back into the arms of the gym. I created a Kelly Clarkson soundtrack to motivate and inspire my fitness goals. However, after a week of re-reading blogs and personal reflection, I discovered that this challenge was not about “diet and exercise”, rather my total wellness. In particular, my focus on mental and emotional health.

Last night, I had a breakthrough.

I have had zero contact with my best friend for several months. The details surrounding are estrangement are personal. They are private and for the purposes of this entry (and anonymity) will remain private. However, it was on my heart to share with you the reconciliation.

A night of sushi and karaoke served as the backdrop for our night of olive branches, sashimi, and rock-n-rolls. A detailed accounting of events is unnecessary and irrelevant to the breakthrough moment of the evening. I sat comfortably staring down the straw of my Long Island, when a familiar melody overpowered the smoke-filled bar. It was “Inside Out” by Eve 6. It was our song. Admittedly, I almost cried. I realized the healing process had begun through a harmonized alternative hit from the nineties at karaoke.

And the rest is history…
