My name is John. Am I the only “John” in the world? Certainly not. And such as is the same for Biblical names. Notice in Chapter 5, there is a man named Lamech, who is the father of Noah. But there is another “Lamech” who was a descendant of Cain…two different people.
And Noah’s father, Lamech, was the son of a man named Methuselah whose name means “When he is dead, it will be sent.” It is believed the Methuselah was dead for only a week before the Great Flood came. And I suspect he was named Methuselah as a prophesy of what was to come.
1 Now when men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took as wives whomever they chose.
While I try really heard to study God’s Word as He gives it to me, there are some things I just can’t derive from reading the Bible, and Verse 1 and 2 is one of these things. I have heard an answer for it, and it makes perfect sense, but still, I have no assurance that that meaning is correct. But what has been said, is the “sons of God” were those descendants of Seth and other righteous off spring of Adam and Eve, while the “daughters of man” are the daughters of the wicked who do not follow God. In other words, instead of the righteous men taking for themselves righteous wives, they began to take wifes who did not believe, who did not follow God. Some denominations believe this verse meant male angels came to earth and mate with female earthings, but I just can’t believe that. I believe that unless God sends an angel to earth in human form, such as Gabriel, all angels are spiritual beings. After all, Satan was an angel, the highest of all angels if you will, named Lucifer, and no one has seen him in human form yet. And I don’t thing God was allow angels to mate with earthling women; a cross between a spiritual being and a human female is just too much like the Immaculate Conception, and we know that only happened once and it was very, very Holy as it resulted in the human birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
3 So the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days shall be 120 years.”
Man was so wicked, God was shortening his life span on earth.
4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and afterward as well—when the sons of God had relations with the daughters of men. And they bore them children who became the mighty men of old, men of renown.
Here is where the “Nephilim” are interpreted to be angels, specifically fallen angels, but I don’t believe that. Ever heard that “smoking stunts your growth”? That was what parents used to say to discourage their children from taking up smoking. But I believe it is somewhat true. Before sin became so great, before there were pollutants in the air that “stunted our growth”, I have no doubt there were “giants”, or what we would consider to be a giant, on the face of the earth. Didn’t David defeat a giant named “Goliath”?
5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was altogether evil all the time. 6 And the LORD regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
Yes, God “grieved” in His heart. When we sin, it saddens and disappoints God, bad enough, He can even be angered. God has feelings just as we do.
7 So the LORD said, “I will blot out man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—every man and beast and crawling creature and bird of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them.”
8 Noah, however, found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
9 This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God. 10 And Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and full of violence. 12 And God looked upon the earth and saw that it was corrupt; for all living creatures on the earth had corrupted their ways.
Everyone has heard the story of Noah. But, a lot of Biblical stories have been embellished to help hold your attention. As an example, over the years, the fruit Eve ate from the forbidden treat has became an “apple”, but no where in the Bible does it indicate the fruit was an apple. The fact is, we don’t know what kind of fruit it was.
And so is the story of Noah. We’ll see some of the differences between Biblical truth and the stories we were told as children that have stuck with us into adulthood.
God bless all of you! And happy Resurrection Day!
