The Meaning Of Life

Bible Study with Big John Tracy

Volume 1-18, Genesis 11:1-9

Even after the world was destroyed by the flood, man did not learn his lesson. We are literally born into sin; man was created perfect, righteous, sinless, but sin changed all of that. From birth, our thoughts are all sinful, starting out with selfishness, and we must be taught otherwise by the word of God.

Eight people survived the flood. Eight. Everyone else was apparently of little faith or non-believers, the Bible doesn’t say. But you know the story of the flood had to be passed down from generation and yet we now come to Nimrod who, like many others, want to be like God.

They start to build a tower to Heaven. Why? The Bible doesn’t say, but I can only imagine it wasn’t for the good. And God had to stop them by changing the languages so they couldn’t understand each other and no longer boe organized in the construction. Ever heard of someone “babbling”? The word comes from the “Tower of Babel” when God confused their speech.

Wonder what the construction of this tower started? The City of Babylon. And we’ll cover this in the future, but the Bible said that after the destruction of Babylon, it would never be rebuilt. In the 90’s. Saddam Hussain started to rebuild Babylon, but his progress was interrupted by the first Gulf War.

After the war was over, he resumed his work on Babylon, and then the second conflict broke out, this was resulting in his arrest and subsequent execution. Prophesy? I personally believe it. I believe that prophesy is God’s way of warning us about the future, and it usually comes true.

1 Now the whole world had one language and a common form of speech. 2 And as people journeyed eastward, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.

3 And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” So they used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar.

4 “Come,” they said, “let us build for ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens, that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of all the earth.”

5 Then the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men were building. 6 And the LORD said, “If they have begun to do this as one people speaking the same language, then nothing they devise will be beyond them. 7 Come, let Us go down and confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”

8 So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it is called Babel,c for there the LORD confused the language of the whole world, and from that place the LORD scattered them over the face of all the earth.

One final note; Who in Verse 7 is “Us”? Who was God talking to? I still run across people that do not believe in a Godhead, the Trinity. But I personally keep finding evidence of a Trinity, God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Ghost, the Spirit. God is perfect. He means what He says. If He speaks in the plural, that is exactly what He means.

Please God…open our hearts and minds and make our earthly minds capable of understanding your Word. It is hard to find someone who is not biasted, or close-minded, and who is willing to tell the truth, therefore we trust that You will teach us, just as Jesus taught when He walked the face of the earth. Teach us father. Give us the meaning of life that is found in the Gospel. Amen.
