As I stated before, we all descended from Noah’s family; they were the only survivors of the Great Flood. At face value, this scripture is just another documentation on Bible geneaology, to some of which, could be boring. But you don’t want to miss out on the important points.
Shem, obviously one of Noah’s sons, and a blessed one at that, is a direct ancestor to Abram, later renamed Abraham, who was the father of the Hebrews, some of which became Israelis, of which some became Jews, God’s chosen people. So, these scriptures are indeed important, plus qualities of God can be seen here.
Sarah, Rachel, Rebecca, Samson’s mother, Hanna, Elizabeth, just to name a few, were all barren and could not conceive a child. There were no “infertility” drugs back then, so if you couldn’t get pregnant, you just couldn’t get pregnant. But in the cases of the women I previously mentioned, God opened their wombs. God made it so they could have children, not just any children, but special children, God’s chosen. God had a purpose for each of these children.
So was it just a coincidence that the women God picked to bear these children were barren? Or was God saving them specifically for the purpose of bearing these special children? God’s Will will be done. God works miracles. God can make anything happen. God made things happen in these women’s lives, He can make things happen in yours.
Note in these verses that Sarai, later renamed Sarah by God, was the wife of Abram, later renamed Abraham, and that God opened her womb so she could bear Isaac. Had God not done that, our lives would be greatly different today.
10 This is the account of Shem. Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arphaxad. 11 And after he had become the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.
12 When Arphaxad was 35 years old, he became the father of Shelah. 13 And after he had become the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.d
14 When Shelah was 30 years old, he became the father of Eber. 15 And after he had become the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
16 When Eber was 34 years old, he became the father of Peleg. 17 And after he had become the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.
18 When Peleg was 30 years old, he became the father of Reu. 19 And after he had become the father of Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters.
20 When Reu was 32 years old, he became the father of Serug. 21 And after he had become the father of Serug, Reu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters.
22 When Serug was 30 years old, he became the father of Nahor. 23 And after he had become the father of Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters.
24 When Nahor was 29 years old, he became the father of Terah. 25 And after he had become the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters.
26 When Terah was 70 years old, he became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.27 This is the account of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot. 28 During his father Terah’s lifetime, Haran died in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans.
29 And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. Abram’s wife was named Sarai, and Nahor’s wife was named Milcah; she was the daughter of Haran, who was the father of both Milcah and Iscah. 30 But Sarai was barren; she had no children.
31 And Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai the wife of Abram, and they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans for the land of Canaan. But when they arrived in Haran, they settled there. 32 Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Haran.
Father, nothing is left to chance except those things You choose to leave to chance. Every thing in life has a purpose, a reason, and while it is so very hard for us mortals to understand, everything in life has a purpose. Everything in life is by design, Your design. Everything in life occurs to fit in with Your Will. And we are a part of that. We each have a purpose, whether or not we respond to that calling is also within His Plan; if not us, He will find someone else. The Bible is the Book of Life, the meaning of life, and if we read and study it, and listen carefully to God’s voice, we may very well discover our purpose in life, why we were born, what God has called on us to do. When Samual was just a child, God spoke to him, but he thought it was the Prophet Eli. He didn’t realize it was God until he continued hearing God’s voice and realizing it wasn’t Eli that was calling him. Do you know your purpose in life? Do you suspect you know your purpose in life? Has God spoken to you? Are you listening? God, fill us with your spirit, help us to understand why we are here, help us to understand how we can help fulfill Your Will. Thank you for giving us Your Word so we have the opportunity to educate ourselves, and thank you for sending your Spirit to each of us to help us to understand. In Jesus name, Amen!
