Lot was Abram’s nephew, the son of his brother Haran, and Lot accompanied Abram on his trek to the land of Canaan. After Pharoah discovered that Sarai was indeed Abram’s wife, and basically kicked them out of Egypt, they all returned to Canaan to take up residence as the Lord had instructed. If you remember, they had left the land of Canaan because of a famine, and he went to Egypt to live.

And the Bible says that Abram was a rich man, with an abundance of gold, silver, and herds of livestock. We don’t know how much of that came from the Pharoah of Egypt, but we know Pharoah give Abram some.

And Lot had lots of livestock (pardon the pun), and both Abram and Lot had hired men (herdsmen) to help tend to the animals. But there were so many, there wasn’t enough land to sustain both families, and the herdsmen began fighting with each other. And there were other groups of people who lived in the area; the Bible is about God, leading up to Jesus Christ, and isn’t all inclusive of everyone who lived during those times. The only survivors of the flood were Noah and his family, 8 of them, and they had to “be fruitful and multiply” to populate the earth again.

So Abram and Lot decided to split up, and Bram told Lot to take the land he wanted, and Abram would take the rest. And this shows the character of Abram. Even though Abram was older, even though Abram was a “patriarch” if you will over Lot, he allow Lot to choose first, and Lot selfishly chose the best land for himself, the most fertile and lush.

Abram could have fought about it. He could have created strife and discontent, but he didn’t. He let Lot have the good land, while he selflessly took the lesser of the two. And because of that, because Abram loved his nephew and wanted what was best for him, even sacrificing of himself, God blessed Abram much more, and Abrams life turned out to be much batter than Lots.

So Abram went to his land and God spoke to him, and promised him all of the land as far as he could see.

If we are selfless in our lives, loving one another, giving of ourselves to another benefit, taking the smaller piece of pie, then God will bless us richly as well.

Love one another. I know it is hard because of all the division in the world over politics, religion, social beliefs, and etc., but I believe loving your brothers and sisters is one of the biggest keys to our trip to Heaven. Even though the Pharisees felt superior to others, were selfish in many ways, were legalistic about the Bible rather than being forgiving like Jesus was, Jesus still loved them. He didn’t like their sins, but he still loved them.

And much like the story of Job, Jesus could have allowed Satan to completely take over the Pharisees, and while they were surely influenced by Satan, not knowingly mind you, Jesus still put a “hedge of protection around them”.

Father, please help us to be more selfless like Abram, to be kind, and generous, and loving to others regardless of how they treat us in return. Everyone is a child of God, God loves them despite their sins, God loves us despite our sins, so lets join together to love each other. Amen.”
