According to Merriam Webster, a “covenant” is a “ a usually formal, solemn, and binding agreement”. There are many “covenants” in the Bible, the first if I’m not wrong is known as the Adamic Covenant, the covenant between God and Adam wherein God gave Adam the Garden of Eden to live and care for, and we know who broke that covenant. The covenant God gave to Abram, was that he would have children, and they would have children, and his children’s children would have children, and as it says in the Bible, look to the stars, that is how many heirs you will have. The reason this covenant was made was because Abram’s wife, Sarai, was barren, and unable to have children, and Abram was concerned he would have no descendants and a servant would inherit everything.

But in this covenant, this formal covenant, this solemn covenant (if it’s a covenant with God, can it be anything but “solemn”?), this binding covenant, God makes with Abram and promises him offspring from his own body.

I have no idea how I would have reacted to this 4,000 some odd years ago. Today, I have learned enough about God that I would have trusted Him…yes, there would be times of doubt, planted by Satan to draw you away from God, but if you’ve made a Covenant with God, you can bank on it.

And that’s that question…do you trust God enough to believe He will hold up His end of the bargain. Will you stick by God knowing His covenants with us are “solemn” and “binding”? And if we do, that is called faith.

And in the next section of this chapter, God prophesies about the captivity of Abram’s descendants in Egypt for 400 years, and we know that prophesy came true. Stop and think, we haven’t even been a nation 250 years yet, and it was for four centuries that the Hebrews, Abram’s descendants, were in slavery to the Egyptians.

And for those who are supporting Gaza, and you can support the people of Gaza because they are God’s children as well, this chapter also tells us that God promised Abram all of the land from the river in Egypt (the Nile), to the Euphrates River which begins in Turkey, flows through Syria, and ends up in Iraq. Does Israel occupy that area now? Or are there other people occupying Israel’s land given them by God?

I urge you to read and interpret this chapter for yourself. The biggest lesson for me is to have faith. Trust in God. If you keep God’s agreements, He will keep His with you. Amen.
