The timing of this chapter couldn’t have came at a better time. As God had promised, he opened Sarah’s womb and she was able to conceive, and she bore Abraham’s son who he named Isaac, and while this chapter doesn’t say, a previous chapter has God telling Abraham that he would become a father of nations, and that his wife would bear a son named Isaac, the Isaac is one of those whom God named before he was born.
And Hagar and Ishmael were jealous of Isaac, and Sarah had even caught Ishmael mocking and taunting Isaac. So Sarah demanded that Abraham send them away.
Abraham took some bread and water, and sent Hagar and Ishmael out of the camp, and they ended up wandering around the Wilderness of Beersheba, but eventually the water ran dry, and they became hot, ill, and were on the verge of death. Hagar sat Ishmael under a tree, then went away from him so she didn’t have to see him die. But God heard Ishmael’s cries and Hagars prayers, and he comforted her, and made her to see a well of water, and she filled the skin and they both drank. And God told her to take Ishmael up because God would also make a great nation of him.
If you’re just joining me in this study, I’m trying to study the Bible alone, without outside input from men, prophets, pastors, or the like because I’m certainly not an expert in the Bible, and the Bible says you will know who the false prophets are because what they say doesn’t jive with the Bible. Since I’m not a Bible expert, that is hard to do.
That said, I still remember what one pastor said about 9/11/01. He said the fight today between the Jews and Christians and the Muslims can be attributed to Abraham and Sarah. The Muslin’s believe that since Abraham’s first born was Ishmael , he is the rightful heir to everything Abraham had, But God had other plans through Isaac. If Abraham and Sarah had have kept the faith and waited for Isaac instead of using Hagar as a surrogate, all of the turmoil that goes on in the Middle East might not have happened. It is so important that we believe in God’s Word and keep the faith, and not go off doing things on your own.
God is true to His word, he means what he says, and He will keep His promises. Amen.
