In Genesis 25, Esau sold his birthright to his twin brother Jacob for a bowl of stew. The Bible doesn’t say, but I can only assume that breaking a vow, even a verbal one, is like telling a lie. And whether or not Esau had the ability to get rid of his birthright, he made a vow to, which in the sight of the Lord, a valid. And Esau was likely not very close to God or he would have felt his birthright was worth more.
Regardless, Jacob was God’s chosen. It was Hit will all along that Jacob multiply the descendants that would eventually occupy the land of Israel.
Now in this chapter, we find out even more. Isaac, Abrahams son and the father of Jacob and Esau, loved Esau more because Esau was his firstborn. But Rebekah loved Jacob more.
One day, Rebekah overheard Jacob telling Esau to hunt down some food and make him a stew so Jacob could bless him. But Rebekah wanted Jacob to have the blessing, so she quickly made a stew of her own.
Esau was very hairy and Jacob was not, so Rebekah dressed Jacob in animal skins so he would feel hairy. The Bible says that Isaac was old and his eyes were failing him.
Before Esau returned, Rebekah sent Jacob in, Isaac questioned his identity but felt the hair on his skin, and trusted that it was Esau, so he gave his blessings. Again, the Bible doesn’t say how Isaac had the ability to pass on blessings or curses (remember Noah cursed his grandson), but apparently they were able. So Jacob received his father’s blessing.
Now, did Rebekah and Jacob commit any sin? Of course they did. They lied and deceived Isaac. Did Esau commit any sin? Yes, he did by selling his birthright, and while we assume it was God’s Will that Jacob continue the family, we do not know that Esau wouldn’t have been the chosen one did he not regard his birthright as sacred or important.
Will Rebekah and Jacob be in Heaven? We can assume so since they were God’s chosen, but we won’t know until the time comes. The point is, they were sinners. Since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, we are all born into sin. We are all sinners just as Rebekah and Jacob was.
If we confess our sins to Jesus and repent of our sins, God is kind and loving enough to forgive us. But, we have to be repentant. We cannot ask for forgiveness, then turn right around and continuing to commit the same sin, taking our Grace for granted.
Remember what Jesus said to the prostitute, “Your sins are forgiven, now go and sin no more.” He didn’t say, your sins are forgiven, now go back to work as a prostitute, he told her to sin no more.
If anyone out there things they are too far gone to be saved, you are wrong. Jesus forgave a thief on a cross in the last few hours of his life. He can forgive you too.
Our God is not a vengeful God. He is our Father, He loves us very much, and He wants us to join Him in Heaven. His door is open, and anyone is welcome. Amen.
