In this chapter, Joseph cannot take it any longer. He has to reveal himself to his brothers. And I still, even though I’ve prayed for understanding, do not know why Joseph has done these things. And yes, I’m sure I can have a pastor explain to me what he or she was taught in theologian school, but he/she are man and they were taught by man, and I don’t want the interpretation of man, I want the interpretation of God, and may He correct me if I’m wrong. The only conclusion I can make is that either Joseph was trying to humble his brothers, or he was trying to punish them. I prefer to think of it in the former, but you never know.
Joseph broke down and wept, and even though he sent the Egyptians away from him, he wept so loudly they could hear him. Then he finally told his brothers who he was, and he began to ask about Jacob, then he started making plans to move Jacob and the rest of his family to Egypt where the food supply was.
Someone went and told Pharaoh, and Pharaoh welcomed Joseph’s family and told Joseph to bring his entire household and that Pharaoh would give them the best land in Egypt, which ends up to be the land of Goshen.
And that is how Jacob, renamed Israel ended up in Egypt.
The first time Joseph’s brother came to Egypt, Joseph could have exposed himself then. So why delay? Why did Joseph play games with them, planting money in their sacks to make it appear as though they stole it, and the silver cup he planted, especially in Benjamins sack; Benjamin had done nothing to Joseph.
Perhaps Joseph did have ill-feelings for his brothers for selling him to the Ishmaelites, after all, Joseph did spent two or three years in prison after being falsely accused.
Regardless, we have all sinned, including Joseph’s actions were intentional and malicious, we are in no position to judge.
