This chapter tells the tale of Jacob’s journey from Canaan to the land of Goshen in Egypt, and even Pharaoh sent things needed to make travel successful
Most of the reminder of thi s chapter details the genealogy of Jacobs sons. And yes, reading about their genealogy can be extremely boring. It is full of names that you have no idea how to pronounce their names, and the chances are good you will never hear the name again. That said, reading the genealogy is extremely important because the ancestors of Jesus incarnate are mentioned. For example, in this chapter, we see the Perez, a man who is a descendant of the tribe of Judah.

Is it just me, or does everyone read the words of Pharaoh in the voice of Yul Brenner?
In this chapter, Joseph’s family introduce themselves to Pharaoh, and for whatever reason, being a shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians. Still, Pharaoh thought enough of Joseph that he welcomed Joseph’s father Jacob, and his brothers, and his brother’s family.
Now the famine became great in Egypt. But because of Joseph’s interpretation of Pharaohs dream from God, they had plenty of reserves stored up. And people came to Joseph to buy food, and Joseph sold them food until their money was all gone.
Then they came to buy food, using all of this livestock as payment, and Joseph sold grain in exchange for the livestock.
And finally, the people came to Joseph giving up their land in exchange for food.
Then Joseph gave all the people grain so they could grow it for themselves, provided they gave 1/5 back to Pharaoh.
I have to assume that Joseph did all this as an employee of Pharaoh, to remain in his favor. Otherwise, I’m not sure what to think about Joseph’s behavior. I understand there are tits for tats, and that you have to pay the fiddler, but what kind of person is it who would help a starving family in exchange for all of their possessions? Is that something Christ would have done?
So, I have to further analyze Joseph’s actions, and think objectively, to try to figure out his angle. And God bless everyone!
