Can you hear God if He speaks to you? Are our lives so busy with noise, that it blocks the sound of God speaking to you?
God speaks to many. He spoke to Adam and Eve. He spoke to Cain. He spoke to Noah, and Abraham, and Joseph.
Sometimes He speaks to us through dreams, sometimes He speaks to us through the Holy Spirit, shaking our conscience, telling us to do good. You know, the cartoon where God sits on one shoulder and Satan sits on the other, and both are convincing the cartoon character to do things, and usually the character listens to Satan because his plan is more fun? Well, that isn’t far from the truth.
When we think about doing something, and the Holy Spirit says, “You shouldn’t do that?”, and we do it anyway, who do you think won that battle? Satan did, of course.
But if God spoke directly to you, would you recognize it? Or would you say, “I’m hearing things”, or “I must be going crazy!” As we will read in the future, God called to Samuel, and Samuel thought it was Eli calling him. And this happened two or three times before Samuel realized it was God calling him.
So Moses is out tending the flocks when he saw a burning bush, the bush was on fire, but it was not being consumed by the fire. And when he went to look at it, God called upon Moses. Granted, Moses didn’t have ear buds plugged in an listening to music, Moses didn’t have a television he was watching while the flock grazed, he didn’t have traffic sounds and cars honking and train horns, but he still recognized it was the voice of God, and he bowed down, afraid to look at God.
Why was he afraid to look at God? I believe stories were passed down from generation to generation, stories from people who had seen God, and told that God’s glory was so bright, it was even possible to kill you. Not because God kills, but because we are not worthy of being in God’s presence.
God proceeds to tell Moses that he was being chosen to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt, that he was being chosen to convince Pharaoh to let the slaves go. And it wasn’t just about keep people oppressed, Egypt was growing, buildings were being built, and the Hebrews were needed for their manual labor to make bricks. And Pharaoh wasn’t going to let them go easy.
Are you ready to hear God? If God spoke to you today, would you listen?
Just like Abraham, and Noah, and Moses, and Samuel, we all need to be alert to the voice of God and the assignment He has for us. God’s Will will be done, and sometimes were are a part of His plan.
Lord, please keep our eyes turned towards You, our minds uncluttered, and our ears open for Your call. We are here to fulfill Your Will. Amen.
