Volume 2-5, Exodus 5

In the last chapter, God gave Moses his instruction to go back to Egypt, and try to convince Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go. And we find that Moses was not perfect himself because he had yet to honor the covenant of circumcision, so his wife circumcised him along the way. There are some harsh words written about it, about the Lord “seeking to kill him”.

God does not “seek to kill” anyone for not following his commands, God is a loving and merciful God. There I believe that this phrase is a misinterpretation of the original text because the King James Bible wasn’t published until the 17th century. And if God were angry with Moses, He wasn’t truly angry at Moses, but rather angry at Moses’ sin. Being a Levite and a descendant of Abraham, I’m sure the covenant of circumcision had been passed down through the generations and for some reason, either Moses or his parents failed to fulfill it. And perhaps the Lord had instructed Moses to be circumcised, and Moses had failed to follow God’s instructions. After all, if I had not been circumcised, I surely wouldn’t want to do it know, especially if I had to do it myself.

Anyway, I’ve decided to interpret my own scripture, with the conviction of the Holy Spirit, and I stand by my words that “God does not seek to kill”, anyone. God didn’t even kill Cain for the act of murder, but instead banished him from the family. If God was that angry over a circumcision, surely he would have been angry over the act of murder.

Back on track, Moses finds and reunites with his brother Aaron, and they went to Pharaoh Remember, previous Pharaoh’s knew the Lord of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, even making Joseph head over the household because of his connections with God. But this Pharaoh doesn’t know God. It’s been almost four centuries now that the Israelites have been captive.

So Moses and Aaron go to Pharaoh to plead for the release of the slaves, and Pharaoh refuses. Not only does he refuse, but he now makes them collect their own straw. The Bible doesn’t say, but I assume bricks were made the old way, with clay mud and straw as a binder. Previously, they were provided with straw, but now they are forced to collect their own in addition to making the same quota of brick.

And they were angry with Moses and Aaron, and Moses questioned the Lord as to why He allowed this to happen.

Sound familiar? How many get angry with God today over the troubles they face? How many people judge the actions of God and why He didn’t intervene. I live in tornado alley, and whenever a killer tornado occurs, I hear non-believers mocking Christians, “Where is your God now? If there was a God, why didn’t He stop this tornado?”

Or most recently, the flooding that occurred in Kerr County, Texas, non-believers are calling God a “child killer” because God did not stop the flood.

My question to you is, how many of those people are trying to have a relationship with God? How many of them love God, and are trying to be obedient to his wishes? How many pray to God, asking for His protection? How many pray to God and thank Him for the good that He does?

I say again, since Even ate the forbidden fruit, this world has been in a battle between God and Satan, and Satan does everything he can to draw people away from God. And if Satan can get you to doubt God for one second, he has won.

There is no doubt in my mind that Satan was present when Aaron and Moses went to talk to Pharaoh. Satan caused Pharaoh to make the work harder, knowing the Israelites’ faith wasn’t strong enough to trust God, and that they would lose faith in God.

And it worked on Moses too. Moses cried out to God, asking Him why He allowed this to happen.

Do not give up on your sinful nature. Even the best people, like Moses, were sinners. Trust in God, remain faithful to God, and continue the everyday struggle to repent from your sins. Satan is strong, are you stronger? Will you defeat Satan?

Lord God, forgive us of our sins and shortcoming. Forgive us for our lack of faith, our questioning of Your intent, and for failing to remain good servants. Before our lives are over, it will take much more strength than what is needed now to endure. Keep us in Your Word, studying the “Meaning of Life”, and every conscious thought on You. We love you, and we ask these favors in the name of Jesus. Amen.
