This tells the story of what Passover means. God has promised the 10th Plague, if Pharaoh does not release the Israelites, every first born in Egypt will die, from Pharaohs first born, to the first born of Pharaoh’s servants, to even the first born of the livestock.
God instructs the Israelites to kill a lamb and put the blood of the lamb on the two doorposts and on the lentil over the doorway. This will be a sign that a child of Israel lives there. They he gives specifications about cooking and eating the lamb. Isn’t it a wonderful significance that it was the lamb’s blood the saved them? And they didn’t just kill a lamb for the sake of getting its blood, they ended up eating the lamb so there would be no waste.
The Lord said he would pass through Egypt that night and strike the first born, but if He saw the blood on the posts and lentil, He would “Pass Over” that house and not harm anyone in it. And that this “Passover” should be celebrated perpetually every year.
The Bible doesn’t say how God will strike the first born. It doesn’t say He will kill them with a sword, or shoot them with arrows. It doesn’t say He will stone them to death. So I say this, and I will continue to say it, I don’t believe God kills anyone. I believe the Glory of God is so bright that the wicked cannot withstand it. And evidence I have for this is that God tells the children of Israel to stay in their houses during the Passover and not come out.
Afterall, we are all born into sin, even the Israelites. Even though they worshipped God and I’m sure had every intention to obey God, it simply isn’t within their ability to be sin free. Jesus is the only man to walk this earth that was without sin.
I believe that God appeared in such a way that only the first born saw Him, and the brightest of His Glory killed them. And in the words of one of my favorite Pastors, I can’t prove it, but you can’t disprove it.
And Pharaoh rose in the middle of the night and called for Moses, and he finally relinquished, and told Moses and the Israelites to leave. And the Exodus begins.
Now that I’ve said if you are not sinfree in the end, the Glory of God will kill you. I also believe that God is a merciful and forgiving God. He knows we are sinful, He knows it is in our nature to sin, and He knows there is no way we will ever be perfect. But if we surrender ourselves to Jesus, I we loved Jesus, if we confess and repent of our sins, even though we will have setbacks, as long as we are persistent and faithful, I believe God will save us. We must accept the blood of the lamb though, just like the Israelites accept the blood of the lamb.
For the non-believers though, for those that reject Christ and mock Christ, there is still time to change. Pray for forgiveness.
And when I say we need to obey God, we should do it not out of fear, but out of love. We are faithful to our spouses, not because it is a law, not because it was in our marriage vows, not because we fear the wrath of our spouse, we are faithful because we love our spouse and we do not want to hurt them; we love them so much, hurting them would be the last thing we would want to do.
And that is the same reason we obey God. It’s not that God rules and we are required to obey His laws, it’s not that God is a tyrant and has set forth laws to keep us in line, we obey God because we love Him, and the last thing we want to do is hurt Him.
Father, thank you for Your mercy. Thank you for Your forgiveness when we pray and confess, thank You for giving us the opportunity to be good servants, and for giving us the blood of the lamb to save us. Amen.
