The Meaning Of Life

Bible Study with Big John Tracy

Volume 4-14, Numbers 25

This chapter is very short, so in light of recent events, I feel I must share my feelings.

This week, a Christian man trying to share his faith with young college kids, not to force it upon them, but to have an open discussion with them. We are supposed to “be the light” and share our faith. He was murdered this week.

This event reminds me that our entire lives are centered around a spiritual battle between good and evil, between God and Satan. It is Satan’s goal to divide and conquer. The more people he can draw away from God to his own camp, the better. And he’s good. He was able to convince a third of the angels in Heaven, living a heavenly life with God, to rebel. And he is still doing it.

Many of us have busy lives. We go to work. We take care of our homes and property. We go out to eat. We go to sporting events. We take vacations. And because our lives are busy, we tend to put God last on our “to-do” lists, and the further we distance ourselves from God, the more Satan is able to draw us away.

I have no doubt in my mind that the gunman who killed Charlie Kirk had unknowingly been drawn away by Satan. I’m not suggesting he was possessed, although we know from the story of Jesus and the demonic man named Legion that that is possible, I’m just saying that he distanced himself away from God.

It’s easy to do. When we pay more attention to live and the things that please us, we pay less attention to God. I have the same feelings about those who are rejoicing in Charlie’s death. They too have been drawn away from Christ. In fact, it is disheartening to see just how many people have been drawn so far away that they no longer believe in God. They mock God. They call Him “sky daddy”, the call the Bible a “fairy tale”. This pleases Satan very much.

And I have many sins myself I have to work on. When I see these things, I myself become angry and have hateful thoughts. That too pleases Satan. He can kill two birds with one stone. So I have to constantly be alert to my thoughts and feelings, and when I derail, I have to get myself back on track.

I have a nice collection of Christian tee shirts. I wear a cross necklace. I have a Christian ring I wear. And I recently confessed to my friend that I thought I wore these things to openly share my faith, but i came to realize these things help to keep me on track. Do not be confused, I am not a righteous man, I am still a sinner. And recently when I started to derail and had no control over myself, I just happened to look down at my shirt, which read, “Normal isn’t coming back. Jesus it.” Immediately it was a reminder for me to stop what I was doing and get myself back together, as they said in the movie “Cool Hand Luke”, it made me realize that I needed to “Get my mind right.”

We need to get closer to God. We need to get back to God, not just for our own salvation, but for others. We certainly do not want to drift so far away we become hateful and choose to preplan a cold blooded murder, then carry it out. Even the most vile and wicked person does not want to die.

But first, we have to remember what is going on. We live in the great battleground between good and evil, and we have to choose which side we want to be on.

As i say, I have a fire extinguisher in my house, not because I anticipate a fire, but just in case I do have a fire. I’m a Christian so that if I’m right, if millions of other Christians are right, I won’t be sad in the end. it doesn’t cost me anything to be a good Christian. It’s free. And there is nothing in my life that is so important that I can’t devote time to God, to studying His word, to talking with Him, to thank Him for the blessings in my life.

Be alert to the things that are good. Be on higher alert for those things that are not good. Be careful on the internet. Recently, Google has allowed vulgar advertisements on YouTube with products that will help you with erectile dysfunction, and there’s nothing “clinical” about them. It’s vulgar, and it’s on the doorstep of being pornography. When those ads come on, I turn my volume down so I don’t have to hear them, and the millisecond the “Skip” button appears, I click it. And that is what you have to do to defeat Satan.

On to todays Bible Study.

I still don’t have answers, but I keep praying for God to show me. I know in my heart, that my God is NOT such an angry God that he orders the execution of people who disobey Him; if He did, we’d all be dead because we are all sinners.

But in this scripture, it tells how some of the Israelites started partying with some of the Moabite women, and as a result, they ended up going to the Moab sacrifices to Baal and ended up bowing down and worshipping Baal. And God instructed Moses to hang the perpetrators.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think so. “If you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen the Father.” Is this what Jesus would do?

King David committed adultery and murder, did God kill him? Like I say, there has to be an answer as to why these things are in the Bible, and I hope someday to ask God about it, unless he enlightens me in the meantime.

The biggest lesson of this story is not to openly associate yourself with immoral people. We should love them as Jesus commanded, we should minister to them, but we should part ways with them as they will tempt us to sin. That is why God was so against the children of Israel fraternizing with the pagans that lived in Canaan who worshipped and sacrificed to false Gods. And that is exactly what some of the Israelites did.

Again I say, I don’t have answers. I’m sure a pastor somewhere could explain it, but then again, I’m trying not to sit on my laurels and let someone other than God teach me about the Bible. This time when reading the Bible, it is between me and the Holy Spirit only. I do have a good friend that I openly discuss the Bible with, but as far as listening to someone who has attended theology school and is simply repeating what they were taught, I’m trying to avoid. Nothing against them, I just prefer to make this go round just between God and I.

Bless everyone.
