In this chapter, God commanded Moses to take another census of the men of Israel, those of who were 20 and older, men capable of going to war. And each tribe is outlined with the number of people in each tribe.
In Numbers 27, God is preparing Moses for his coming death. The only one of the original generation of those brought out of Egypt would not be allowed into the promised land because of their sin, including Moses, because he disobeyed God at the waters of Meribah, and instead of commanding the rock to produce water as God had told him, he became angry and struck the rock with his rod.
But God did tell Moses to go to the top of Mount Abarim, which overlooked the promised land, and let Moses look at the land that God had promised.
Now Joshua and Caleb, the only two that came out of the promised land after spying and who were confident they could defeat the giants because God was on their side, were the only two of the previous generation allowed to enter.
And Moses asked God to appoint a leader over the children of Israel so they not be like “sheep without a shepherd, and God commanded Moses to make Joshua their new leader after the death of Moses.
We know Joshua sinned because he was a man born until sin. But he is virtually the only man in the Bible, aside from Jesus, in which none of his sins were pointed out. And Moses did as God had commanded and “inaugerated” Joshua as the new leader.
Chapters 28 and 29 detail the offerings that were to be given on each of the sabbaths, feasts, and celebration of the children of Israel.
Does anyone here see a symbol of times to come. God is giving commands to the children of Israel, telling them that if they follow those rules, they can entered the promised land.
And today, God has given us rules, that if we follow them, we are allowed into the promised land called Heaven.
Happy Sabbath! Amen!
