Today we finish the Book of Numbers.

And the Pentateuch focused mainly on the Patriarch, so everything was gear towards males. But in the case of Zelophehad, he only had daughters, and previously addressed this with God because by the laws, they could not inherit anything because they were female. And God granted the daughters to have an inheritance. They were descendants of Joseph whose inheritance was split between his children Ephraim and Manasseh.

In this chapter, the daughters of Zelophehad shared concerns that, by the rules, when they married, their inheritance would go to their husbands, meaning the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh would lose an inheritance to another tribe. So God told Moses that they could marry anyone they chose as long as it was within their tribe so the inheritance would stay with Ephraim and Manasseh.

In the last chapter, the promised land was divided between the various tribes. A map below shows the location of those tribes, and in addition, the land of Edom and Moab through which the children of Israel had to travel and war with to get to the promised land. If you’re like me, any and all visuals help me to better understand what I’m reading.

Also notice what major Israeli cities are and to whom they belong.

Understand, this study is a study of the Bible chronologically. The standard Bible is not organized that way; the standard Bible organizes all of the psalms in one book, the books written by major prophets are all combined into a group, the minor prophets all in another group. But if you simply read the Bible front to back, it may be difficult to understand. Especially if you read the psalms as a book itself. There are 89 psalms before you get to Psalm 90, the Psalm of Moses, and it may likely be the first psalm written.

So when studying the Bible chronologically, the psalms are included during the time period in which they are written.

The writings back then are much more complex than they are today, more structured, more formal, more poetic, so they can at times be difficult to understand. But we must do our best.

Enjoy Psalm 90, the psalm of Moses, written near the end of his life.
