In this chapter, Moses brings to a close the lesson on the Ten Commandments. And here are what I believe to be some of the important points.
Verse 2 says that you should “fear” the Lord. Another word for “fear” is “awe”, and I don’t believe you should be afraid of God, but rather in awe of Him. If we should fear anything, we should fear ourselves distancing ourselves from God. When we work our way away from God, when we fail to pray and have conversations with Him, when we fail to study His word, that is what we should fear, not God Himself because He is a loving Father. Yes, there is a punishment for sin, but it is not a punishment that God inflicts on us, it is a natural consequence of our separation from God, a separation caused by our failure to love and worship Him.
The chapter also says we should keep God’s Commandments for all of the days of our life. Does God chance? Does God say, “Whoops, made a mistake, let me fix that?” No, God does not make mistakes, He is unchanging.” So why do many say we are no longer “under the law”, that the death of Jesus means we don’t have to follow the Commandments? And if that is the case, it must be okay to murder, or commit adultery, or lie and steal, right? I have yet to find scripture that nullifies the Ten Commandments. If there is one, please share it with me, I truly want to know the truth.
“You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and between the frontlets between your eyes”. What does this mean? What is the “frontlets of your eyes”? I interpret this to be in your hand (by your works) and in your mind (your forehead). No, we are not saved by good works, but we can surely be condemned for bad works. Good works is not legalism, good works shows your love for God and your desire to fulfill His law, as Jesus did. “I have not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it.”
The rest of the chapter warns about disobedience of the law. And there is scripture that says things like, “arousing God’s anger” and “God’s wrath”. When you read scripture like this, always turn to Jesus. “If you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen the Father”. God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are separate, yet they are one under the Holy Trinity, the Godhead if you will. When Jesus said, “If you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen the Father”, He meant, “God is just like Me”. When you read about “anger” and “wrath”, think about Jesus…when did He get angry or show wrath. I can remember a couple of times; one, when he found they were conducting business in the Temple, and two, when He scolded Peter saying, “Get behind me Satan!” And again, was Jesus angry with Peter, or was He angry with Satan?
When we read about God’s anger or wrath, always keep in mind His anger or wrath is with sin, not with us. He loves us. We are His children.
There is another harsh scripture that says God will “destroy you from the face of the earth.” Never forget Nadab and Abihu, who were “consumed with fire”, yet the Israelites were able to “carry them out of the camp by their tunics”. If they were consumed by God’s fire, how did their tunics survive.
Because it wasn’t literal fire that consumed them, it was the brightness of the Glory of God. As I think about that Glory, I think that it might be as bright and burn as hot, if not hotter, than the sun itself. And if we put on the Armor of God and do our best to follow Jesus’ and God’s Commands, we will be able to withstand that Glory. If we are not worthy, we will likely be consumed by that Glory.
Even Moses, being the man of God he was, wasn’t able to look at God directly, and when he asked to see God, God put him in the cleft of a rock and passed by him, so Moses could only see God’s back and not His face.
We have to be careful with language. We have to be careful with translations. The prejudices of man, while unintentional, can alter things. As an example, the original Hebrew text of the Old Testament did not contain any punctuation; punctuation was added by the translators, and we all know the difference a single comma can make.
Trust in God. When you study the Bible, pray for knowledge and understanding. Pray that God sends the Holy Spirit into you to teach you the same way Jesus taught the disciples. Then we will know the truth.
