Fear. All throughout the Old Testament we are taught to “fear” God. God is full of wrath. God demands we follow His rules, or else. Does this mean we should be afraid of God? When we sin, are we to coward down, fill with anxiety, beg on our hands and knee for forgiveness?

The “fear” in the Bible doesn’t mean “fear” as in to “be afraid”. Merriam-Webster says it to the point. One of the variety of definitions of the word “fear”, is profound reverence and awe especially toward God.

I don’t have to tell you that the “fear of God” is to have profound reverence and be in awe of Him, Merriam-Webster does. The sole fact that they included the words “toward God” is pretty clear to me, “fearing God” means to give reverence to Him, to be in awe of His Glory and Power.

That said, we dive into Deuteronomy 9 and 10. And remember, these scriptures are by Moses, reviewing with the children of Israel what they had been through. And in Chapter 9, he reviews the rebellion against God, how the first tablets containing the Ten Commandments were broken and in Chapter 10, how he had to get a second set of tablets, as ordered by God.

And finally Moses passes along the essence of the law. In other words, here is why it is important to follow the law, which is still valid today, and how we regard God, our Creator.

12“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your [f]good?

“Fear the Lord”, not to be afraid of Him, but to have reverence and awe for Him. To walk as the Lord wants us to, to love Him, and to serve Him, with ALL your heart and soul.

And to keep His Commandments, because they are still valid, they were issued by God and affirmed by Jesus, and because God doesn’t change. He made no mistake when He issued the Ten Commandments. His covenant with us changed, but the law didn’t.

And because those Commandments were so vital and so precious, they were safely stored away in the Ark of the Covenant, and only the sanctified Levites were even allowed to touch it.

If you feel the Mosaic Law is no longer valid, please show me New Testament scripture where God, or Jesus, Commands that the Ark be breached and the tablets broken because they were no longer good. And also remember that God commanded that a vessel of manna also be stored in the Ark as a constant reminder of the days the Hebrews wandered in the wilderness, and how God fed them and cared for them.

God was pretty clear when He issued the Commandments. He didn’t dance around the issue, he didn’t give vague scripture that was open to interpretation, He didn’t give scripture that could be challenged in any way, shape or form. We can hand pick scripture in the New Testament and twist it around and spin in so it makes it sound as if Mosaic Law is no longer valid, but any open minded Christian can see through that. To me, the spin on those verses is only to allow us more freedom so we don’t have to observe Mosaic Law.

And isn’t it better to be safe than sorry? Isn’t it better to follow God’s law, even if a pastor tells you it is no longer valid, what will it hurt?

God bless everyone, I urge you to seek the truth as it is written in scripture.

Amen.
