Chapter 15, Verse 1 says that every 7 years, debts are to be cancelled. Incidentally, 7 is the perfect number, not for gambling, but in the Bible, and you will see the number 7 throughout the Bible. Now, I tried this verse for my mortgage and car loan, but it didn’t work (I actually didn’t, but it would be nice if it did.
Since the root of all evil is the love of money, I can assume that this law was to avoid conflict and strife over money. If you loaned something to your neighbor, you did so knowing that if they didn’t return it, you would have to let them have it and forgive them. Now, if you were on the other end, it might just be considered theft. If you were making a good-faith effort to pay back a monetary loan, you would likely be okay, but if you kept something you borrow with no intention of returning it, that is theft.
The rest of the chapter discusses helping the poor, being generous to them, how you treat your servants, and laws concerning the first born of your livestock.
Chapter 16 reviews the importance of observing the Passover, the time when the first born in Egypt were taken, but if the Hebrews put lambs blood on their door posts and mantle, death would “pass over” them. God does not want Israel to ever forget what He did to release them from the bondage of Egypt.
Chapter 16 reviews other feasts Israel should observe, and ends with the laws pertaining to judgement, many of which are still in existence today.
What we don’t realize is that many of our laws today originated in the Bible. And by the way, there is nothing about the division of “Church and State” in our constitution. That was in a personal letter that was penned by Thomas Jefferson, and in the context that government should not interfere in religion.
Even those who worship Satan should be allowed to freely choose to do that; God will render judgment on them. But if the government interferes and passes a law that forbids Satan worshiping, then the government can pass a law about how I, as a Christian, worships, and I do not want that. Daniel experienced that as we will see when we get to that book.
Happy Sabbath! And God bless you all.
Amen.
