Volume 5-21, Deuteronomy 17-19

Chapter 17 starts with various rules pertaining to sacrifices and judges, and ends with rules for Kings. It is important to note that God never intended for Israel to be ruled by Kings, but being all-knowing, He knew that they would want to be ruled by Kings. Read this section very closely, and you will see how it comes true later on.

In Chapter 18, Moses reviews the portions that are to be given to the Levites, descendants from Levi, who did not get a share of the land with the other sons of Jacob, but instead were given the task of caring for the Tabernacle and for ministering to the people.

Then Moses warns again, as as it turns out, the people cannot be warned enough because they fell to this rule, about wicked customs, worshiping false gods, worshiping idols, and such behavior.

Then Moses says that after he is gone, God will raise up another prophet to replace him. In fact, God raises many prophets throughout the rest of the Bible to communicate with the people and to show them the way.

In Chapter 19, Moses begins by reviewing the Cities of Refuge and their purpose. If you remember, those cities are where someone, who unintentionally kills another, can flee and seek refuge from their avenger.

Then Moses reviews the boundaries of each tribe, then reviews the laws pertaining to witnesses, among other things, against giving false testimony.

And yes, these last three chapters are simply a review of things we’ve already read. But, they were a “stiff-necked” people, stubborn, not inclined to follow the rules, and they needed constant remind. Kind of like when we go to church today, we usually don’t hear anything new, it’s usually just a reminder to keep us, or try to keep us on track.

Just like the children of Israel, we too are stiff-necked, we too are stubborn, we to break the rules, and we need someone to remind us. We need constant Bible study. We need constant prayer. We need constant reminders to keep us on the right path so we do not stray away from God.

Amen.
