In this chapter, Moses reviews the laws concerning warfare. And the very first verse is something you should remember, because it will be very important later. Later you will see how an entire Israeli army forgets this verse, but how one young boy remembers and pretty much defeats an entire army because he has this faith in God.
1“When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and people more numerous than you, do not be afraid of them; for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up from the land of Egypt. 2So it shall be, when you are on the verge of battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people. 3And he shall say to them, ‘Hear, O Israel: Today you are on the verge of battle with your enemies. Do not let your heart faint, do not be afraid, and do not tremble or be terrified because of them; 4for the Lord your God is He who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’
This can also apply to us today when we are at war with Satan. As I’ve said before, our entire lives surround a great battle between God and Satan. Satan is trying to draw us away from God, to make us lose our faith, to make us question God, to make us turn against Him. And there will be many, many times when we feel we are not strong enough to defeat Satan, to win the war against him, but remember this verse. No matter how strong Satan, his angels, and his temptation is, God is always with us. God is on our side. And with God, we can win, we can defeat Satan. We will read later where Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days, being tempted by Satan, and Jesus did not fall, because He had God on His side.
And again, this shows how badly that God is trying to eradicate the wicked in order to save the world. The pagan’s that are living in the land of Canaan, the wicked descendants of Canaan who have fallen completely away from God, who have totally forgotten God, who are worshiping idols and sacrificing their children at the altar, will only lead everyone else away if not stopped.
Do you see any parallel’s to today? Do you see how many have turned away from God, how many have forgotten about God, who are worshiping idols, whether it be a physical idol like a statue, or when it is an idol like a television, smart phone, or athlete? And do you see the sacrifice of children through abortion, for our own pleasures of the flesh, because we cannot be burdened with caring for a child because it will interfere with our lifestyles? And believe me when I say that our lifestyles and our desires can also be a god that we worship. Anything that takes priority over worshiping God is an idol; it doesn’t have to be something physical that we bow down to.
And you may think that life it too hard, that following God is too demanding, but trust me, the reward is far greater than we can imagine.
