These chapters of Deuteronomy cover various laws that God has spelled out, and you can read about this as you study. Each of these laws are important and you need to know them, but they are too numerous to cover in one sitting, so I recommend you take the time to read and study each section of each chapter.
What I’m focusing on today is the very last section Chapter 26.
16“This day the Lord your God commands you to observe these statutes and judgments; therefore you shall be careful to observe them with all your heart and with all your soul. 17Today you have proclaimed the Lord to be your God, and that you will walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments, and His judgments, and that you will obey His voice. 18Also today the Lord has proclaimed you to be His special people, just as He promised you, that you should keep all His commandments, 19and that He will set you high above all nations which He has made, in praise, in name, and in honor, and that you may be a [h]holy people to the Lord your God, just as He has spoken.”
The children of Israel are God’s Chosen people, and God has set them “high above all nations”. I have several thoughts on this.
First, I am confident that this is still very valid today. And regardless of your spiritual opinion, social opinion, political opinion, or any other opinion, I feel it is our responsibility to support Israel in current situations and future. They are God’s Chosen. I can imagine God thinking that if you don’t support Israel, you don’t support Him.
Second, I’ve said many times that we all descended from Noah, and that is a given since Noah and his family were the only ones to survive the flood, we after that, we don’t know. Did we come from some of Noah’s good descendants, or did we come from the descendants of Noah’s grandson, Canaan? Did our ancestors worship God, or did they worship Baal or Molech? It really doesn’t matter, we can always repent and turn back to God at any time, no matter our history, and turning back to God means supporting Israel, when they’re right and when they’re wrong. God will take care of things when they’re wrong, as we will discover as we read further throughout the Bible.
Third, because Israel is God’s Chosen, we should all strive to be Spiritual Jews…whether we have a Jewish heritage or Gentile heritage. Christ brought us all together to be followers of Him, but remember, Christ was a Jew. If we are going to follow Christ, we should follow Israel as spiritual Jews.
Some may ask, should we follow Jewish law? No, we should follow the laws set forth by God in the Bible. Remember, the Pharisees were Jews, and not only did they not follow all of the rules, they were the ones that crucified Jesus. If we follow the Bible, we will know we are the right side. And I hear many say, “Those laws were meant for the Jews only”. I don’t believe they are, I believe they were meant for everyone, but for the sake of discussion, let’s say those laws were for the Jews only.
Who did you descend from? The Bible clearly states that the Jews would be spread across the world, so while you might not have a Jewish name, how do you know that centuries ago, your descendants were not Jewish? To me, if you say “those laws are meant for the Jews and I’m not Jewish”, then you’re assuming you descended from pagans that worshiped idols and sacrificed children.
And is there some place in the Bible that says those laws are for Jews only, or is that something your pastor told you? And are you going to make it to Heaven based on whether you live according to God, or whether you live according to your pastor.
That is why it is so important, and why I am studying the Bible without thoughts and ideas from any resource, so I make sure that I am following God and Christ.
I pray that you do the same.
Amen.
