Father, teach us, show us the truth, open our hearts and minds to Your Spirit.
1So it was, when all the kings of the Amorites who were on the west side of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until [a]we had crossed over, that [b]their heart melted; and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the children of Israel.
It’s still sad that Israel’s enemies, enemies of God, saw the awesome power of His glory even more than Israel themselves. But things are getting better. This generation, the generation born in the wilderness who never saw Egypt, seem to be more faithful and less “stiff-necked”.
And the word had spread that God had stopped the water in the Jordon River, and the Canaanites were in awe of God, and afraid of the children of Israel, knowing that the God of Abraham was on their side. Their hearts “melted”, and there was no more “spirit” in them.
Then the Lord told Joshua to circumcise the men of Israel because they had yet to be circumcised; those had been circumcised in the wilderness had died in the wilderness, and those born in the wilderness had yet to be circumcised, so Joshua carried out that task.
And they set up camp in Gilgal, which was just a short way from Jericho.
13And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “Are You for us or for our adversaries?”
14So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.”
And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?”
15Then the Commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.
“…behold, a Man stood opposite him…Notice how the word “Man” is capitalized? That means it’s a Holy Name.
“And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “…Notice how the word “Him” is capitalized?
And Joshua asked, because this Man was obviously ready for war, if He was for or against Israel. And He answered,
14So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.”…the word “Commander” is capitalized.
And Joshua fell to his face and worshiped. Joshua knew this was not just a “man”. And the Commander of the Lord’s Army said,
“15Then the Commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.”
Who was this “Man”? Why was the ground upon which He walked Holy? This man was the Son of God, Jesus, before He assumed the name “Jesus”. Jesus and two angels were the ones who were on their way to Sodom and Gomorrah when they stopped at Abraham’s camp and supped with him. And Jesus can be found throughout all of the Old Testament.
And even more, “Jesus” is the English translation of the Hebrew word “Yeshua”, which is also known as “Joshua”. Joshua, Moses’ servant, like the Son of God, was named Joshua.
There will be times throughout the Bible where you will see the word “Angel” capitalized. When you see that, that is also a name for the Son of God. Now Jesus wasn’t an angel, but He was the Archangel, the head of the angels. So when you see the word “angel”, it is just one of the angels, but if you see it capitalized, it means the name is Holy, and it means it is the Son of God.
Here is further proof of the Holy Trinity, God the Father, Yeshua the Son, and the Holy Spirit. All three of them are God, or the “Godhead” if you will.
Jesus was present at Creation. When we get to the Gospel of John in the New Testament, John tells us,
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [a]comprehend it.
Notice how “Word” is capitalized? It is Holy. You can also read this verse as, “In the beginning was Jesus, and Jesus was with God, and Jesus was God. Jesus was in the beginning with God.”
Praise God for His creation! Praise God for creating us and allowing us to live! Worship our Creator!
God is awesome, God is merciful, God is loving.
Amen!
