And Saul answered and said, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family the least of all the families of the [f]tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak like this to me?” – Saul, 1 Samuel 9:21
So he said to Him, “O [d]my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” – Gideon, Judges 6:15
Sound familiar? You don’t have to be the wealthiest, you don’t have to come from the most popular names, you don’t have to be at the top of the socialite circuit, you just have to be willing. When God picks you for a job, your status is of no matter, in fact, He is probably more likely to pick the meek and mild because they are not prideful and full of themselves. Those people seem to fall harder to defeat than others.
So in this chapter, we see God give the people of Israel their king, and he picks a man named Saul. And it was all God’s Will, the lost donkeys, Saul and his servant out searching for them, their not so chance search for the prophet Samuel who might be of help in finding their donkeys, all of this was planned to get Saul and Samuel in the same place at the same time so Samuel could anoint him King of Israel.
And just like Gideon, Saul was modest and couldn’t understand why he had been chosen. And Samuel prophesied what was about to take place and told it to Saul to help him believe and have confidence, and scripture says that the “Spirit of the Lord” came upon Saul. Scripture says God made Saul a new man; He gave him a new heart. And even after all of this, Saul was still modest and introverted, because when it came time to present him to the people, he hid among the equipment. And even when he returned home and his uncle asked him about his search for the donkeys, Saul told him that they had found Samuel who told them about the donkeys, but Saul didn’t tell his uncle about being picked to be king. Saul was very modest and likely very introverted.
All throughout scripture, we see God pick the most unlikely people to be His servants.
Noah drank too much.
Sarah, Rebekah, and Rachel, all of whom were barren, were selected by God to be the mothers of Israel.
Moses stuttered.
Gideon didn’t have very high self-esteem, and his faith wasn’t very strong either.
Samson couldn’t keep his libido in check.
Hannah was barren.
And now, He picks a modest introvert to be the first King of Israel.
Are you ready to acknowledge God’s call? When God calls you, will you say, “Here I am!”, like Samuel, or will you try to talk God out of His Will like Moses? When God calls you, will you have confidence in yourself to answer, or will you be like Gideon and Saul who ask, “I am the least of my family…how can I be picked?” When God calls you, will you be able to put all of your earthly pleasures second in life, and serve God to the fullest, or will you be like Samson who falls for lust and ends up blinded?
God’s Will will be done. If you are selected, you really don’t have much of a choice, you just need to be prepared to serve. God is priority, when He calls you, be prepared to drop everything and do His Will. We will soon read about a man named Elisha who was in the middle of plowing a field when he was called, and he dropped the plow right then and there, and answered God’s call without even looking back at the plow or the oxen.
And if you don’t answer God’s call, if you dig your heels in and absolutely refuse, then Satan will very likely call you to serve him, which will be a deadly choice.
Be prepared!
