The four Gospels of the New Testament, the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, are pretty much about the same, just from a different perspective. It is reported that Mark wrote his Gospel first, and Mark was a man of few words; in the words of Sgt. Friday of the TV Show “Dragnet”, just the facts ma’am.
Matthew came along, but he added more details and more observation. Luke, a physician and friend of Paul who was pretty much just an outside observer, record his own version and what Matthew and Mark saw, then John had a completely different take on the subject, adding even more details and more observations.
The same is true for Chronicles. And we see in 1 Chronicles 3-9, we review the genealogy of David, his son Solomon, then we review the families of the 12 tribes of Israel. And in 1 Chronicles 10, we have a repeat of the details about the death of Saul and Jonathon, which were originally covered in the last chapter of 1 Samuel.
One chronological reading plan I followed in the past was chapter for chapter, it instructed you to read 1 Samuel 31, then 1 Chronicles 10 immediately followed. But the reading plan I’m following now isn’t quite that precise. Still, it’s good review, and for the most part, it’s good for reference. Sorry, but knowing the names of Solomon’s children he had from his different wives and concubines just isn’t on my memorization list, and I never hear anyone quote 1 Samuel 31:13 “So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had [d]committed against the Lord”.
Still, it is included in the Bible for a reason, even if that reason is just for reference.
God bless you all.
