A psalm is actually a song set to music. They usually don’t rhyme like a modern day song, I believe they are more of a chant, a singing prayer if you will.
The majority of the psalms were written by David, and the title of many explains the setting or situation David was in when he wrote the psalm. Other were written by the “sons of Korah”, Moses had one, there are various psalms written by others, then there are some whose author is unknown.
In Psalm 60, it describes a psalm written after David went to war with Mesopotamia and Syria, and a battle Joab had with the Edomites. And likely, we haven’t came to those specific stories yet; it is difficult to actually pinpoint the exact chronology of the Bible. And this gives another reason why the Bible, in my opinion, should be read chronologically; if you read it from cover to cover, you would end up reading all 150+ psalms in succession, the meaning of them difficult to understand if you are unaware of the events for which they were written. Then again, some psalms were purely written just to praise God, without a specific event in mind.
And each psalm is important as it reflects on the character of God; a lot about our Creator can be found.

Keep in mind there is a difference between a Tabernacle, a place of worship, and a Temple, a more permanent and more prominent structure. David built a Tabernacle while the Temple was reserved for his son Solomon in accordance with God’s Will. And God’s Will, will be done.
And David restored order to the laws established by God with Moses. The Levites were charged with caring for the tabernacle and carrying out the ministerial duties, they had sacrifices, and he distributed food to everyone for a great feast. And this is what God intended, for everyone to gather together to worship, to keep God at the forefront of everyone’s lives, and to live peacefully with each other. And you can see how that has deteriorated over the years.
Since Jesus walked the earth and Christianity began, differences in how Jesus’ teachings were interpreted has now lead to over 14000 different Christian denominations, and today, those denominations or being divided once more because of social differences. More and more people believe that God is so loving, that He ignores sin, and while God is love, you cannot survive by separating yourself from Him, or sugar coating scripture to fit your desires.
And speaking of sugar coating, which I will not do, there are more and more churches believe that God is so loving, He will ignore homosexuality, and many churches that welcome gay families. While I don’t believe it is a sin to be gay, I believe it is a sin to practice homosexuality. As an example, I can look at a beautiful woman and lust after her, but not physically do anything about it. And while it is still a sin to even think about it, with God’s help and conviction, I can quickly turn my mind in a different direction. As a pastor once said, it is normal for a man to look at a beautiful woman and his mind strays…but if we immediately recognize that and start thinking about something else, baseball for example, we can avoid lingering in sin. It’s not repentance if we recognize our sin of lust, and continue to do it. So, I have many friends who are gay and whom I love very much, and as long as they don’t practice homosexuality, I believe God will accept that. But there are churches today that preach just the opposite, that it is totally okay to live in homosexuality. And even recently, a pastor mid-sermon confessed to his congregation that he was going to be transgender. While we have to love them, it is also our duty to minister to them and pray for them as well.
This is just another example of how Satan is infiltrating our churches, telling lies as he did to Eve herself, and fulfilling his mission to “divide and conquer”.
So getting off my ramble, we do not worship today as God intended. Few have actually read the Bible, most simply get up Sunday morning, put on their nicest clothing, go to church and listen to their pastor, then go home, not giving another thought to God until the next Sunday. And as we will find out later, Jesus said, and I’m paraphrasing, “many will call My name, and I will say ‘I don’t know you’”.
But as we’ve seen all throughout scripture so far, the children of Israel sin, their leader has to get them back on course, then they sin again, and their leader has to get them back on course, etc. As of now, David is getting everyone back together now that he has established Jerusalem, the City of David.
Then David wrote his “Psalm of Thanksgiving”. And not being a smart man, I asked my assistant Alexa, (who isn’t always right), why this psalm isn’t included in the Book of Psalms, and this is what the answer was.
“David’s Psalm of Thanksgiving in 1 Chronicles 16 is not included in the Book of Psalms because it serves a specific historical context related to the Ark of the Covenant’s arrival in Jerusalem, while the Psalms were compiled later as a broader collection of worship songs. The psalm’s themes and lines were incorporated into the Psalms, but the original context and purpose in Chronicles differ from the final arrangement in the Psalter.”
I didn’t even know there was a word “Psalter”. I know I’ve had many foods that were “saltier” than others, but I didn’t know there was such a thing as a “Psalter”.
Have a bless day!
