The Meaning Of Life

Bible Study with Big John Tracy

Volume 10-18, Psalm 76-78

Many of these psalms are so poetic, they are over my head. I admit it, I’ve said before I’m not very smart, not very analytical when it comes to literature. Sometimes when I read the psalms, it reminds me of High School English when we had to read a poem out loud, then explain to the teacher what it meant. What did it mean? I don’t know…some of the poetry rhymed, others didn’t, that’s what I know. And Psalm 76 is an example of what I’m talking about…it’s beautiful, but was to the meaning of why those words were written, I haven’t a clue.

As is Psalm 77. What struck me when I read this psalm is they mention the days of old, the “ancient” days. Hundreds of years elapsed between the life of Moses and the life of David, yet the psalmist is still talking about the wonders that God did during the exodus. Why do we not talk about them anymore? Those stories, the lessons behind those stories, those works of our God, should forever be on our minds. We often forget how awesome our God really is, the wonders He is capable of doing, unlike the psalmist Asaph who wrote songs about it. Perhaps we would be closer to God if we still acknowledged those wonders more frequently.

And in Psalm 78, he even writes about telling these things to future generations. Now I know they passed a lot of history down verbally in those days, but they still had written scrolls somewhere. David himself wrote many psalms, and I doubt if he dictated them to someone who was collecting writings for the Bible. And even though they had writings back then, they still talk about making sure the future generations were told about God so they wouldn’t forget.

I have family in which God is at the center of their lives and I have no doubt they live this way, but for the most part, how many families sit down today and read the Bible together, and talk about how God got us to this point, versus how many families simply drag their children to church and expect the church to teach them? I confess, I failed on that part with my children, and I can’t be the only one. Maybe our youth would be less prone to violence, less suffering from depression, kinder and less selfish if we had raised them with God in our hearts and homes.

We need to talk about God more. I know many people say that religion is a “personal” thing to them, and I can understand some of that, but God is not a personal God to us, He is our God, everyone’s God, and if we keep Him at the forefront of our lives, I think things would be much better.

In the words of the late Charlie Kirk, “God, Family, and Country, in that order”.
