I never served in the military, I became a fireman at the age of 18, just four months out of High School. I did work with a Vietnam Vet who served two tours in Vietnam as a medic, and he one commented that the things we saw in traumatic vehicle accidents on the interstate were just as bad as the things he saw in Vietnam, so I can somewhat imagine what veterans of war encountered.
As those veterans encountered those situations at the young age of 18 had to be mentally traumatic. To go from sock hops and soda shops to the jungle with bullets whizzing past your ears and, not to too graphic and grotesque, but watching your buddy you went through boot camp with get an arm tore off by a mortar shell.
Now put yourself in the shoes of David. One minute he is sitting in a field of green under a blue sky absorbing the warm sun, watching sheep graze and throwing rocks with a slingshot to kill the time, and frequently meditating in prayer because you are a faithful child of Jacob who believes in the God of Abraham and worships him.
The next minute you are called in from your duties with the flock where a well known prophet pours oil on your head and announced you will be the next King of Israel. And your voice just finished changing just a year or so ago. And within a very short while, you have a great number of enemies trying to kill you, you are seeing graphic scenes of war of men getting pierced with arrows and getting limbs cut off with swords, and you are still just a very young man…some might even call him an older boy.
What David went through couldn’t have been any less than what our veterans of Vietnam, Korea, and the second World War went through.
Once you have thoroughly thought about the life of David and what he went through, now read his psalms. Read his pleas with God to protect him from his enemies. Read his prayers of worship for the God he knows is his protector; his life is in God’s hands. Perhaps you might get just a touch of feeling for what David went through.
I know myself, when I’ve read the Bible, I’ve read these stories of war as if they were a movie, not a fictional movie but a documentary. Oh, and there are no visuals, just the script. It’s hard to imagine life in those days, let alone what war was like. So you have to stop and contemplate, try hard to put yourself in the shoes of our historical Bible ancestors, and it will help you understand the scriptures and psalms they wrote down. And truly contemplate their words.
Psalm 109 is just one of many psalms where David is praising God, thanking Him for his protection, and praying for God to help him with his enemies. And he wrote many, because he was in many battles, most against him.
On the next note, how many people enjoy going to church? I know there are many, I’m not suggesting the world is completely lost; there are many faithful people in this world that love, truly love God, and they love to participate in church activities, to study the Bible, to have fellowship with like-minded Christians, and most importantly, to worship our Creator.
But I can assume there are just as many whose only involvement with church is on a Sunday morning, and while they would rather have breakfast in bed and read the Sunday morning paper (which is almost nonexistent in this day and age), but they feel it is their “duty” as a Christian to show up, or to make an “appearance”, all the while trying not to fall asleep during the sermon, frequently checking their watch, and feeling their stomach growl so they can get church over with and get home to Sunday dinner.
Now read Psalm 122 and see how joyous David is when he gets to go to the House of the Lord!
And finally Psalm 124 is a wonderful psalm because David is actually giving credit to God for the safety and victories they have had against their enemies. I love my country and consider myself to be a true patriot, but how many wars has the U.S. been victorious in which we say, “We won that war.” No, we didn’t. God did. God enabled us to win. Without God, we wouldn’t have been victorious. And thankfully, God is on our side, protecting us from those who have political ideologies that are anti-Christian, and social practices that are against humanity.
And while we still fight those battles, and while the enemy appears to be getting bigger and stronger, we know who wins in the end. God and His faithful followers!
Amen!
