Volume 11-1, 1 Kings 1-2

God’s Will will be done.

Sometimes we thwart His Will and it takes longer to get done that what He had planned, but His Will will be done. We’ve seen it happen before, and we’re seeing it again.

God clearly intends for Solomon to become King to follow David. Somewhere along the lines, man gave credit to the firstborn, perhaps because they were the eldest or maybe the wisest because they had been on this earth longer than the other siblings, but God doesn’t go by that. Ishmael was Abrahams first-born, but God intended for Isaac to lead the Hebrews. Then again, Isaac was supposed to be the firstborn, but Abraham and Sarah’s lack of faith threw a kink in that. But, God Will was done.

Esau was the first born, but it was God’s intent that Jacob lead Israel. So it was. And even though Reuben was Jacobs first born, it ended up being Joseph who saved the family from famine.

So here we are again. God has made it clear to David that Solomon has been chosen to be the third King of Israel. But David hasn’t clearly communicated that to everyone, or his children think that their will supercedes God’s. Sorry, doesn’t work that way.

Another one of David’s sons assume the throne, and you know what happens when you assume…you make a…well, you know the thing. And by now David is so old and so frail that he is bedfast, and he can’t keep warm so they’ve brought in a beautiful young woman to lay with him and warm him, although David never “knew” her, which means to have sexual relations, but David is to the point that he knows little about the day to day business.

So when David’s son Adonijah proclaimed himself the King, Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, and Nathan the prophet among others, all went to David to report this action that veered God’s Will off course. So David had to take action, and gave the orders to annoint Solomon the King. And they did. And despite Adonijah’s wishes, God’s Will was done.

Now the next important part of the story was that when Adonijah heard that Solomon had been annointed, he went to the altar and grabbed the horns, and refused to let go until Solomon promised that he would not be killed. And Solomon said that as long as Adonijah turned out to be faithful, he would not kill his half-brother. But let’s not forget that stipulation.

Can you imagine living in a time when you are in a culture that when you have a family disagreement, you kill your sibling? But that is how it was. Joseph’s brothers intended to kill him, but was saved by Judah. Gideon had a son that killed all of his brothers, and Absalom killed his brother who had raped his sister, and those are just the immediate events that come to my mind. People could not be trusted, even if they were your own brother. And because of that culture, Adonjina was afraid Solomon would kill him because he tried to slip in an take the throne. And Solomon swore he would not kill Adonijah if he turned out to be a good guy. And Solomon was wise to throw in that stipulation, and as we will see, Solomon was considered the wisest king, and as we will see…well, just stay tuned.

Have you been watching “The Shepherd King”? Those are the things I really enjoy because I’m not a fan of reading, so I love to “wait for the movie to come out”. But still, you have to read the Bible to make sure that what you’re watching lines up with scripture, or you could easily be deceived. Remember, at one time in history, the “church” kept all the Bible and the Christians didn’t have access to them. The “church” told them, “You don’t need to read them, we’ll tell you what you need to know.” And that didn’t work out very well.

Have a blessed day!
