Scripture doesn’t say, but short of Divine intervention, you know the Levites had to be constantly working on the portable temple, a tent with some fabric walls, to keep it in a state of repair and to shelter the Ark of the Covenant. Our country is this year celebrating its 250th birthday, and there are a few colonial structures from that time period still standing, but most are made of stone, not of woven fabric exposed to the elements, and at the start of the construction of the temple, it had been almost five centuries, since God rescued the Hebrews from their oppression in Egypt and had given them the tablets of stone and instructed them on the construction of the portable temple.

And as with most everything constructed in the Bible, including Noah’s ark and the portable temple, scripture is very descriptive about the measurements of Solomons Temple and the materials used to build it. God had to have known that that record would be needed in the future to dispel myths about the authenticity of the Bible. We know that in the search for Noah’s Ark, the Biblical description has been used to search for the remains of the ark, but still, the non-believers refuse to believe.

In Chapter 7, it talks about all of the other buildings Solomon built around the temple, the building that housed the throne, the Hall of Pillars, the Hall of Judgment, and others. And again, we find detailed descriptions about those as well. It is as if God knew that some day archeologists would be digging in search of relics that were described in the Bible, even down to a shekel of silver.

And finally, after almost 500 years, a formal structure for worship was built, and the Ark of the Covenant was brought in. Remember to keep track of the last mention of the ark in the Bible as it is still lost! And Solomon dedicated the Temple and blessed the people.

And God finally had a place in which to rest. And today, churches are still called the “Houses of God”, or the “Houses of the Lord”, and God is thought to reside in them and they are considered Holy. But then again, God lives everywhere, He is in each and every one of us, and we ourselves are Holy, and scripture says our bodies are a Temple, and that is why we should take care of our bodies.

And as I look at myself in the mirror, I need some Levites to take care of me as I haven’t taken very good care of my temple (but I know God still loves me despite all of my faults).

And while these chapters may feel tedious to read considering they are similar to someone giving you a verbal description of a blueprint, but let’s find it refreshing that there is no mention of murder, or rape, or sibling killing another sibling, or someone trying to overthrow the kingdom. It is for once, rather peaceful.
