Sexual immorality. We’ve sure been spending a lot of time talking about adultery and harlotry. Must be pretty important to the Lord, huh?

I hear fellow Christians all of the time say, “We are not saved by works. We are not saved by works!” Yes that is true, but we will sure be damned without them. And in Proverbs 7, Verse 3, “Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart.” Why would God want the law to be bound to your fingers?

As far as this proverb, yes, scripture is talking about harlotry. But ponder this; could harlotry be a simple symbol for sin itself? “The attire of a harlot”; isn’t sin alluring just like a seductively attired woman? “A crafty heart”; didn’t the serpent have a crafty heart? Wasn’t his goal to cause Eve to doubt God and to eat of the forbidden fruit? The serpent didn’t just say, “Go eat of the fruit, it’ll be okay”, but rather he said, “Surely you will not die”, seductive words not beckoning you to something, but distracting you from faithfulness. I don’t know firsthand mind you, but harlots don’t come straight out and ask if you want sex…if they said that to a vice officer, they would go to jail; rather, they say things like, “Wanna date?”, “Lookin’ for a good time”. Isn’t that what sin says to you, “Lookin’ for a good time”?

“He did not know it would cost his life.” When we sin, are we really thinking about eternity? Are we thinking that “the penalty for sin is death?” I am a sinner, but I can’t recall the last time I’ve intentionally sinned; mine is usually after the fact when God convicts me. Still, if my mind was constantly on my Creator and showing my love for Him through obedience, I would constantly be aware of my actions.

I’ve told this story before, but I was watching a woman on YouTube that had her own home cooking channel, and she was making some kind of dessert; I don’t recall now exactly what it was. But when she was finished, she called her husband to taste it and to testify to how good it was. Now, we pray for blessings on our food before we sit down to eat a meal. But when this woman took a spoon, dug into that dessert, and held it up to her husbands mouth so he could take a bite, he said, “Thank you Jesus” before he took that bite. That is a man that has the Lord on his mind at all times; he showed thanks not for an entire meal, but for one simple bite of food. He was constantly aware of his actions…God was at the forefront of his thoughts. And no, I still haven’t learned my lesson from this…to this day while I’m cooking, I’ll taste something for seasoning, or I’ll grab a handful of peanut as a snack, and not once do I have my head screwed on straight enough that I remember to thank God, because if it wasn’t for Him, I wouldn’t be snacking, let alone sitting down to an entire meal.

So without a doubt, God dislikes harlotry, but the enticement of harlotry can also be a symbolic look at sin altogether. And it is wise for a man to avoid sin of any kind. And just for reference, the harlot can be forgiven her sins if she repents. Jesus forgave a prostitute when everyone else was expecting Him to stone her to death.

Praise God!
