These psalms were written by David while his army was at war with the men of Absalom.

When David returned to Jerusalem after the death of Absalom, he was caught between a rock and a hard place. Even though Absalom was full of wickedness and had every intent to kill his own father, as he did his own brother, a parents love never wanes. No matter how bad your child becomes, you still love them with all of your heart. Hmmm…much in the same way God loves us.

But David’s dilemma was that he was mourning for the death of his son, which was completely normal, but he was ignoring the people who had fought for him. I’m sure the people knew the strife David was in, now that he had lost three sons, Absalom, Amnon, and the baby he had from his sinful relationship with Bathsheba while she was still married to Uriah, yet looking in from the outside, they were able to remain objective and could see that Absalom would not have hesitated to kill David…wouldn’t have blinked an eye, and the people saved David’s life. And now, David is opening mourning the death of his son and giving no tribute to the people that saved him.

Knowing David, he probably would rather Absalom lived he he himself had died. But Joab spoke a cold, hard, truth. The people fought for David, and if he didn’t acknowledge them, they would abandoned him.

Imagine if God were in David’s shoes. Here we are, all sinners, and God gave us His Son, sacrificed His own Son. What if God had turned against us, angry that He had to sacrifice his Son because of our sins, grieved so badly for the death of Jesus that He ignored us. How many would have turned against God? The parallel between God giving us His Son and David and his son aren’t even close…I’m simply talking about the emotion felt by a father about his son. Can you feel how grieved God had to be by the death of Jesus, yet He never turned from us, He never forsake us, He doesn’t hate us. In fact, God gave us His Son out of His love for us.

And it is an unconditional and unfathomable love that we can’t begin to perceive. God is love. Love God back.
