When I read this proverb, my mind immediately went back to Adam and Eve. Genesis 3, Verse 4: Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” What is God was not worried that man would know good and evil and “be like God”, but He was more worried that they would they were God, like Satan. God was afraid they would learn pride, from Satan, and that is the real reason the tree was forbidden.
And we will never know what that tree contained because man was evicted out of the garden and God even put cherubim with flaming swords to prevent them from sneaking back in and getting more fruit, because now that they had tasted the forbidden fruit, they would surely wants more. But instead of praying for knowledge and wisdom from God, they would forget Him and get it from the tree.
Verse 5 of Proverbs 2, “Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, And find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding”. If you want wisdom and understanding, get it from God, not from a piece of fruit. God is the greatest and most wise of all, and He gives it out if we ask for it. And it’s not just limited to wisdom; anything good in life comes from God, and we should seek His Wise counsel every time we face a struggle, or come to a fork in the road and don’t know which way to go. Pray. Pray for knowledge and wisdom and counsel, and God will give it. And this was from a sermon almost 60 years ago when I was just a child, but it has always stuck with me; “God answers all prayers, but sometimes the answer is ‘no’”. When you come to that fork in the road, you’ll probably know which path you prefer, but if you pray and seek advice from God, be prepared to take the other road, the one you aren’t inclined to take; just rememeber, God is wise and His Will will be done.
That said, refresh my memory…where did Solomon get his wisdom? He wasn’t born with it, he didn’t get it from a piece of fruit; he got it from God and it was because he asked for it.
But, wisdom isn’t the cure for everything. You can be wise and know what is right to do in life, but you still have to follow through with it. Verse 10 and 11 says, “When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul,
Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you.” Discretion. You have to use that wisdom with discretion.
I just watched a video on Facebook the other day, made by a woman of God. And I have to paraphrase, but it went something like this.
“God, our world is full of turmoil. We have received knowledge of the protests in Minnesota, the Epstein Files have been released with the names of many influential people…what is it you want us to do with this knowledge? And God answered me and said, ‘Stay in your lane. Am I not capable of handling these problems. Do you not have faith that I will resolve these issues according to my will. (She was in the process of cooking chicken dinners to give to the homeless). Cook your chicken, stay in your lane. Feed the homeless, stay in your lane. Pick up the kids from school, stay in your lane. Fix dinner, stay in your lane.” It was such a powerful message about faith in God and letting God solve the problems of the world, which is a very wise thing to do. God is giving you wisdom, but use it with discretion.
And right now, God is giving me the wisdom to stop rambling before I get lost in my thoughts and words, so I believe I will use some discretion, and honor that.
God bless everyone!
