4 The king establishes the land by justice, But he who receives bribes overthrows it.
Well.
I certainly don’t want this site to become a political rant, but Solomon started it, and does not this verse apply to today? Congress has a political slush fund to payoff their victims of sexual assault and harassment, and a government aide committed suicide by setting herself on fire, alledgedly because of sexual improprieties, by a congressment. Another congress woman introduced a bill that would release the contents of the secret trust fund, exposing those congressmen who had been accused of sexual misconduct and had to use the slush fund to pay the victims off. And congress voted against releasing the names.
And to top it off, sources say that millions and maybe billions of dollars sent in foreign aid didn’t actually make it, but instead was funnel back into the pockets of certain congressmen. For a long time now, I have developed a great mistrust of our government, at all levels, in all political parties.
As a teen, I worked in an aircraft accessory plant, landing the job because the work performed was labor intensive and didn’t require much intellect. As a result, they hired young kids willing to work for minimum wage along with drug addicts and convicts who couldn’t find employment elsewhere. Most of the employees were hippies from the 60s who were anti-government and felt they were “victims” of society. But I remember the following, scratched into the wall of the dirty and grimy bathroom wall, and I was so impressed with the vocabulary they had used. “There is no justice in America. It is just an illusion, created by the wealthy, to perpetuate their wretchedness.” I still laugh when I think about that, and yes, I’m still impressed that anyone working there could come up with something like that. I’m sure it came to them when they were in the middle of a marijuana high.
I know our current president isn’t very polished; he is rather blunt and says what is on his mind, like it or not. And that is one of the reasons I like him, there is no doubt in your mind where he stands, he’s not a career politician that will tell you what you want to here, then does completely the opposite to suit themselves. And today, this verse really hits. Our president is fighting for justice, but he has to fight congress (and the media) every step of the way.
And I don’t mean to rant about America, I’m sure this verse applies to any country, with any form of government, anywhere.
“15 The rod and rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.”
I think about how many fatherless homes we have and how many of our youth do as they please, not listening to their mother, even involved in street gangs. That said, whenever I read these proverbs, I try to put them into perspective as to how they apply to our world today. Wisdom doesn’t expire, like God’s word, it is eternal.
OK. I’ve read Proverbs 30 at least three times, and apparently just read it without studying it. This time, I have questions. Who is Agur? Who is Ucar? And why is Agur writing in Solomons book? This one I had to use reference with. So I searched, and found nothing.
Apparently, nothing is known about Agur or his father, from the Bible or from history. He is only mentioned in this chapter and no where else. Theologians believe that Ithiel and Ucar may not have been actually people, but rather symbols for anyone who wants to learn about Agur’s wisdom. And to be honest, since nothing is known about any of this, the only way it would have been included in the Bible would be if the scribes and translators felt Divine guidance on this chapter.
That said, consider it to be God’s word, and take the wisdom to heart.
Finally, the last chapter of the Book of Proverbs is from King Lemuel’s Mother, and again, is a proverb not written by Solomon. A friend and I recently had a discussion, and she felt this proverb had a dual role; not only was it giving her son wisdom in the type of wife he should seek, it also gave him wisdom on what type of a husband he should be to his wife.
Whether male or female, it is important to find a spouse that is not only a believer, but one who shares your same faith, values, and ideas. One of the reasons God did not want the children of Israel to intermingle with the Canaans was because of their pagan ways, worshiping idols and such. God knew the Canaan women would draw the male Hebrews away from God. Of course, the children of Israel disobeyed and didn’t heed God’s warning, and many fell to sin by adopting the ways of their spouse. And that holds true today.
If you marry someone of a different faith, or has widely different views, or at worst, a non-believer, there is a good chance they will draw you away from God. Temptation is too great. You may think you can convert someone to Christianity, but likely it will be the other way, they will draw you away from Christ. So instead of shopping for spouses at the grocery store, or laundromat, or nightclubs, try church, or a revival, or a Bible Study session.
