The Meaning Of Life

Bible Study with Big John Tracy

Volume 11-38, 1 Kings 16, 2 Chronicles 15-16

In just two short chapters of kings, we’ve had several changes of command, in both Judah and Israel. And as I read their accounts, it reminds me of someone who has watched a movie that I haven’t, and they are telling me about it, giving me the abbreviated versions and telling me the high points.

Then again, some of them reigned for just three short years, so the story of their kingdom would be short as well. Scripture tells of each one as to how faithful they were, whether or not they followed in the sins of their fathers, or if they tried to make a positive change in Judah and/or Israel. In fact, one even dethroned his grandmother as queen because she had worshiped idols.

And in the chronological Bible, those that tried to pinpoint dates and put things in order did the best they could, but there is still some jumping back and forth; not all of the books of the Chronicles match the books of Kings perfectly. But it is important, even though it may sound familiar, to read both, because there are some passages in Chronicles that provides just a bit more information than the Book of Kings does, and vice versa. And, we are obviously in the first book of Kings while at the same time period, we are in the second book of Chronicles, so obviously the timelines will stop somewhere.

And they are still at war with each other, Judah and Israel. And there is talk of “seers” who advise the kings, seers which I have to assume are minor, very minor prophets. It is a sin to participate with mediums and “seers” who, like the Witch of Endor, was the type who “brought back the dead” for you. So the “seers” spoken of here, you have to trust they were true messengers of God.

In fact, I’ve ordered another book of materials that was excluded from the Bible. “The book of Nathan the prophet, Gad the seer, Jehu, Shemaiah, Iddo, and others: All in one”, apparently contains material written by these prophets and seers. Of course, Nathan was a prophet for David, as was Gad. Where the writings came from, and whether or not they are accurate and valid is to be determined.

Even those the accounts of the lives of these kings was short, there will be some more indepth coverage to come, because the King of Israel is now Ahab, who had a wicked wife named Jezebel, and we all know the type of woman we refer to today as a “jezebel”; yep, because of her. Surely you don’t want to leave a legacy like that, do you? I would be horrified if, in the future, there was any reference to a wicked man as a “Big John”. And as you will see, Jezebel didn’t have a happy ending.

On a side note, I started listening to a podcast about the Shroud of Turin yesterday (haven’t finished it yet), and they noted they think they’ve pinpointed the exact date Jesus rose from the grave. This was done by examining the Jewish calendar and tracing backwards.

Jesus was 33 when he was crucified (33 1/2 if you want to get technical), and in the year AD33, calculating the Passover of that year, that Sunday was April 7th, which coincidentally coincides with this coming Sunday of April 7. Not making a claim or backing it up, just passing the information on. I’m sure there are theologians and scholars who would disagree with that.

God bless everyone!
